Iba pala kay Duterte: Bishop thanks DENR for heeding Marinduque folk’s concerns on mining
A senior Catholic Church official thanked the Department of Environment and Natural Resources under the Duterte administration for heeding the concern of Marinduque residents about mining.
Boac Bishop Marcelino Antonio Maralit said that while past administrations treated mining as an economic activity, only President Rodrigo Duterte promised to go after who destroyed the environment.
“Ang mensahe ko sa kanya, salamat sa kanyang kahandaang laging makipag-usap sapagka’t napakatagal nang issue itong pagmimina sa Pilipinas and for the past few administrations ito yung priority nila economic priority and for the first time meron tayong pangulo ngayon na ang kanyang tanong, hindi ito ang priority natin, iba at dapat tignan natin kung anong nangyari at dapat pagbayarin itong mga nanamantala at umabuso sa ating bayan na mga kumita at yumaman,” he said on Church-run Radyo Veritas.
The Radyo Veritas report said residents voiced concern about the environment shortly after Marcopper Mining started operations in Marinduque in 1969.
In the 1990s, a spill released poisonous chemicals from the mine, killing at least two and affecting local livelihood and agriculture.
