Sato pushes expanded coverage of national Protected Areas
Occidental Mindoro Representative Josephine Ramirez-Sato on Thursday (June 1) filed a consolidated bill seeking to expand the coverage of the National Integrated Protected Areas (NIPAS) Act.
The Mindoro politiko said the proposed amendment will ensure stronger protection measures, increase, and institutionalize funding for Protected Areas (PA).
Sato stressed the urgency of passing the proposed measure in the House of Representatives.
A counterpart bill already passed third and final reading in the Senate.
“For 25 years since the NIPAS Act was passed in 1992, there are only 13 Protected Areas covered by law. We have a total of 240 Protected Areas under NIPAS,” Sato said.
She added the bill will also respect the right of Indigenous Peoples.
