DOLE to Nutri-Asia: Regularize 914 workers
Some 914 workers of food manufacturer Nutri-Asia Inc. may soon be regularized, on orders of the Department of Labor and Employment.
The DOLE issued the order after it found Nutri-Asia and three contractors violating labor laws by engaging in labor-only contracting.
Aside from Nutri-Asia, found violating labor laws were contractors Alternative Network Resources Unlimited Multipurpose Cooperative; Serbiz Multi-Purpose Cooperative; and B-Mirk Enterprises Corp.
Labor compliance officers also found some violations of occupational safety and health standards such as the non-provision of personal protective equipment to the workers, and the non-conduct of work environment measures.
DOLE Regional Office 4A head Zenaida Campita issued a compliance order directing the firms to give regular employment status to 914 of their workers.
Citing its investigation, the DOLE said inspectors noted there was no safety officer, nurse and first aid worker who would have been needed in emergencies.
It also found the workplace also did not provide for a clinic for employees.
Other findings include illegal deduction for the workers’ uniforms and underpayment of basic wages and other wage-related benefits.
Nutri Asia Inc. makes condiments and other cooking products, which are used worldwide.
The company also sells its products through a network of distributors in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific, and North America.
