Liberal Party: Is Harry now also China’s spokesperson?
Liberal Party vice president and former Quezon Rep. Erin Tañada slammed presidential spokesperson Harry Roque for his statements defending China despite its militarization in the region.
In a statement he asked if Roque was now also a China apologist.
“Is Malacañang spokesperson Harry Roque now also spinning for China? Is this why he is twisting the survey results showing Filipino low trust of China as due to the ‘new alliance’ forged with the country that has built a military base in the West Philippine Sea?” Tañada said.
Contrary to Roque’s interpretation of survey results showing that Filipinos hold a neutral view of China, Tañada said “Filipinos know better.”
“They are not blind to what is happening,” he added.
“They see China’s occupation of disputed features despite the international tribunal’s ruling that invalidates China’s Nine-Dash Line claim over vast waters way beyond its borders. They see China’s naming of features in the Philippine Rise as another sign of aggression. They see China’s offered loans with onerous interest rates as a crippling debt trap,” he said.
Tañada added, “And Filipinos see the government’s kowtowing to China peddled as a great act of friendship. They see their interest set aside, interest that the government is duty-bound to serve and promote. They see their burden and suffering due to this government subservience to a foreign power.”
“Filipinos know. Filipinos can think for themselves. Filipinos will not ‘give it time’,” he said.
