Quezon province church official opposes dam project
Catholic Church officials in Quezon province are up in arms against the Kaliwa dam being constructed in the province’s Infanta town.
Infanta Bishop Bernardito Cortez said that while they do not oppose the benefits of the dam, they are concerned over the potential danger the dam poses to residents.
Cortez said they do not want a repeat of tragedies caused by climate change, adding the area where the dam is being built is near a fault line.
“Alam po natin na ang lugar namin ay bahagi ng fault line, may darating at darating na lindol. At ito po ay daanan ng lindol at magtatayo ng dam,” he said on Church-run Radyo Veritas (Prelatura ng Infanta, Mariing tinututulan ang Kaliwa dam project).
He added more than 1,000 residents were killed when a cyclone hit the area in 2004.
“At alam naman po natin ang uri ng ulan at ng Klima, kawawa naman kami,” he said.
Projected for completion in 2023, the P18.7-billion dam project is funded by Official Development Assistance from China.
Earlier, Cortez issued a pastoral letter opposing the building of the dam in Infanta.
